What is ERG mode?

ERG mode allows you to control the desired power output at all times by automatically adjusting the resistance on the trainer, regardless of the speed, cadence or gear, to keep the power at the set value.

This allows you to do controlled workouts since the trainer will adapt to maintain the power you specify. For example, you can program a training session where, after warming up, a 200W power output is applied for 4 minutes, followed by a 2-minute recovery at 60W, repeated a set number of times for 50 minutes. The trainer will adapt to maintain these specified power outputs and time intervals regardless of the speed and gear ratio.

Note: The braking system on the trainer requires a minimum speed to supply certain resistances, meaning that if this speed is not reached, it will not be able to supply the specified power output, in which case the speed will have to be increased otherwise ERG mode will be deactivated.

How is an ERG workout set up?

To set up an ERG session you have to enter bkool.com and log into your account. Once logged in, press sessions and search for the session you want to ride. Remember, we have over 900,000! Once you’ve found the route, click “Advanced settings” and then you can start to specify your targets, either by Zone or Power.

Continuing with the example above, and using a 50-minute profile with no elevation change.

10-minute warm-up
4 x (4 min. at 200W, 2-min rec. at 60 W)
4-min recovery
4 x (4 min. at 200W, 2-min rec. at 60 W)

In Targets, program the various intervals using the selector and the sliders:

The link programs this example: 50′  2 [ 4 x (4′ 200W rec 2′ 60W)] ERG

This same method can be used with any route, whether by time or distance, to specify Zone or Power targets. When a Zone is specified, the average value is used.

Sample ERG Mode session

The simulator will notify you when it’s time to enter an ERG mode, and in the data display, the power will be shown in ORANGE while the mode is active.

It’s also shown in the 3D view above the cyclist:

ERG mode can be deactivated by pressing the ‘P‘ key, or on a tablet, by touching the power reading. The trainer resistance will now reflect the elevation profile and you will no longer have to maintain the power or zone specified in the target.

Activating ERG mode in a route or session without programming it first

To activate ERG mode, start pedalling. Once you reach your preferred power output, press the ‘P‘ key or on a tablet touch the power reading. After a few seconds, ERG mode will be activated at whatever power you are outputting at that moment.

To deactivate it, press the ‘P‘ key, or on a tablet, touch the power reading. The trainer resistance will again be adjusted to reflect the elevation of the profile you are riding.

We look forward to seeing you in the Bkool Simulator, let’s ride Bkoolers!
